POSEIDON AND HIS HEROES: Trusted Heroes Of Sea God

Poseidon picks out his Greek bravehearts!

After Zeus came Poseidon, the violent and ill-tempered god of the sea, to choose his Greek heroes. He is feared as the provoker of the earthquakes and worshipped as the creator of the horse. Being a hot-blooded deity, he has had many disputes with both gods and men, most famously with Athena and Odysseus.

Due to his multiple powers, ancient Greeks prayed to him through many epithets. Some of them are ‘saviour of sailors’, ‘averter of earthquakes’, ‘the creator and tamer of horses’ and ‘the leader of Nymphs’.

Being one of the most powerful gods, Poseidon also chose 2 Legendary, 1 Epic and 1 Common hero.

Odysseus (Legendary Hero)

The legendary hero Odysseus was the king of Ithaca. He is known among the Greeks for being an eloquent speaker, an ingenious and cunning trickster. Being one of the suitors Helen, he was obliged to join the Trojan expedition. It was difficult for him to leave his beautiful wife Penelope and son Telemachus back home. He fought in the Trojan war both as a strategist and a warrior.

On his way back home to Ithaca, he angered Poseidon and who in return made his journey miserable. He returned home after 10 years and lived a wholesome life full of adventure.

Hippolyta the Amazon (Legendary Hero)

Hippolyta, the queen of Amazons is famous for owning the Golden Girdle that Heracles was tasked with obtaining. Being the daughter of Otrera, Queen of Amazons, and Ares the god of bloodlust, she embodied both bravery and ruling.

As a sign of her right to rule the Amazons, she was presented with a magnificent Golden Girdle by her father. The popularity of the girdle reached across the ancient world and it caused quite some trouble for her.

Europa (Epic Hero)

Europa, a moon goddess, was the daughter of King Agenor of Sidon. An entire continent in the world is named after her. Beautiful as she was, she caught the fantasy of Zeus.

Once she was gathering flowers by the sea with her friends where Zeus came in the form of a white bull. As she slid onto its back, the bull charged off. Once Europa realised that the bull must be a god, she pleaded for mercy. Zeus explained to her his love and took Europa to Crete. Hera has no knowledge of Europa’s affair with Zeus.

Agamemnon (Common Hero)

Agamemnon- the ruler of Mycenae was the son of King Atreus and Queen Aerope. His brother Menelaus was married to Helen so he fought bravely in the Trojan War along with my brother.

After returning from war, he realised that his wife had started an affair with his cousin Aegisthus. It began a deadly family affair of betrayals and murders.
